Education and Training

Education

Rottnest Island, WA – As part of the implementation of the Strategic Waste Management and Resource-Recovery Strategy, APC undertook market research via face-to-face interview, focus groups and surveys to redesign the recycling centres, signage, stickers, logo and slogan for the new waste program with the assistance of a Strategic Waste Initiative Scheme Grant from the Department of Environment (DoE). In addition, training on the new waste management system was provided to all staff, concessionaries and school children.

Warraber Island, QLD – The pilot project on Warraber Island required the community to embrace a new way of managing and separating waste into four streams. An education program was paramount in order to build knowledge and understanding within the community of what to do, how to do it and why it should be done. Extensive consultation was undertaken with the community, health workers and school in developing the resources. The school was a focal point for delivering messages with activities, excursions and competitions. Targeted posters, bin stickers, fridge magnets and shopping bags were developed to support the program. Community meetings, radio interviews, newspaper articles, newsletters and a door-to-door campaign (when delivering new infrastructure) outlined how the program worked and what actions were required of the community.

Training

Australian Packaging Covenant – In conjunction with Mobius Environmental, APC developed and delivered Recovery and Recycling Workshop and Technical tours for the Australian Packaging Covenant for 101 packaging companies across four states throughout 2012. Signatories to the covenant participated in a series of technical sessions, tours of recycling plants and workshops to review existing packaging design and to redesign problem packaging. These sessions aimed to increase the knowledge and awareness of participants in regard to the recyclability of their (and their competitors’) product packaging to provide greater awareness about environmental and sustainability claims and package labelling. APC are now offering this program as an ‘in house’ training option to any company seeking to up-skill their staff and clarify the true recyclability of their own packaging.

Broome Shire Council, WA – Broome Shire is located in the North West region of the Kimberley in Western Australia, about 2,200 km north of Perth and covers an area of 56,000 km2.  APC director, Anne Prince, led a half-day briefing with Council-elected representatives, senior management and waste management staff in relation to future planning for waste management for the area. The workshop session was broken into three modules focusing on where are we now, operational considerations and the time critical aspects for a new landfill facility and the approval process.
