Remote and Island Waste Management Solutions

APY LandsZero Waste South Australia (ZWSA), SA – APC carried out a whole-of-state-government review of waste management in the unincorporated areas of South Australia  to undertake, an area that represents more than 60 per cent of the state, for ZWSA. APC travelled 9,500 km in 24 days, visiting 28 communities and 31 landfills and transfer stations. The Outback Waste Management Report captures the issues and challenges facing regional and remote areas, and identifies the barriers and opportunities. The report contains 47 recommendations based on the key themes of infrastructure, resource recovery, administrative arrangements and technical capacity.

BHP Billiton and Anglo American – Groote Eylandt, NT – APC was invited to review the entire waste management arrangements for mining giants BHP Billiton and Anglo American, which produce more than 2 million tonnes of manganese on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC) owns the island and with planned expansions imminent, APC determined current performance, appropriateness and identified opportunities for future improvements in respect to day-to-day operation to ensure best practice and improved data capture.
